Android new system

A new Android 1.1 system image is now available for download from HTC. The Android dev phone 1 (ADP1), which was introduced in December offers both an unlocked bootloader and easy flashing support, so you can better install custom Android builds.

The 1.1 developer build is fully compatible with the retail 1.1 Android release. This allows programmers to test software on their dev units with a matching installation. This Android Developers site has set up a Google group dedicated to questions and answers about updating the Android dev phone.

Android applications unavailable for unlocked G1 phones

Google’s Android division is currently blocking users of unblocked G1 phones from downloading paid applications on the Android market, the policy is aimed at preventing casual user-to-user pirating of applications and only involves copy protected applications. The new policy onle effects “copy protected” applications and not all paid applications.

According to the latest rumors next-generation T-Mobile G2 phone is ready and is due for release this May. The G2 will be thinner and not include the pull out keyboard of the original G1, according to Gizmodo, which published what it said were “spy photos” of the alleged, slick-looking device. New T-Mobile G2 will be equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera and maintains an interface similar to the current G1 also based on the Android operating system. It will lack a physical keyboard, users will be introduced to the virtual or onscreen keyboard well known from Apple devices.

New Android app is a fully featured Last.fm radio application that supports the open nature of the Android OS. It allows you to stream your Last.fm stations, view friends’ profiles and watch out for up coming events. LastFM takes all the features from the website and crams into the little screen on the G1. Users can save stations, find the top 100, view their library of music, find items recommended by LastFM, start new stations, and the many profile tweaks and settings that the website allows you. It keeps you notified of what you are listening to via the notification tab in Android. Fans of LastFM may be pleased with all this and the fact that the app can run in the background while your doing other things, like checking your email.

G1 unlocked for developers

Google has just announced the availability of a developer phone that can be purchased by registered Android Developers. Costing $399 (roughly the same price as a contract-free G1 phone from T-Mobile), the phone offers an unlocked bootloader and allows easy flashing for the installation of custom Android builds. It is available for purchase in 18 international markets. You must join the $25 Android Marketplace program in order to purchase a device. Regular users interested in an unlocked phone are being warned that these units are intended for developers only and are to be used at your own risk.
